Advanced Design of Roads (300IGC027)

Basic Information

  • Course code number and name: 300IGC027, Advanced Design of Roads.
  • Credits and contact hours: 3 credits, 3 hours per week.
  • Course coordinator: James Cárdenas
  • Type of course: Selected Elective.

Text book

  • A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, AASHTO, 2004.

Supplemental materials

  • Highway Geometric Design, J. Cárdenas, 2nd Edition, 2012.
  • Geometric Design of Roads. Ministry of Transport, Colombia, 2008.
  • Route Location and Design, T. F. Hickerson, 1964.
  • Traffic and Highway Engineering, 4th Edition, N. J. Garbel, L. A. Hoel, 2009.
  • Roads: Study and Project, J. Carciente, 1980.

Specific course information

The fundamentals of the analysis and general criteria of urban-intersection geometric design are presented. At the end of the course, the full geometric design of a road network composed of at-grade intersections and grade-separated junctions is performed. Special emphasis on the use of computational tools is made.

Specific goals of the course

Learning objectives:
  • To design and draw urban highway projects.
  • To define the geometric parameters of at-grade intersections and grade-separated junctions.
  • To design the components of an urban highway.
